AOG Bishopry

<b>AOG Bishopry </b>
The Assemblies of God in the Philippines marked a significant milestone on August 28, 2026, by conducting its first-ever bishop ordination at Word of Hope Central in Quezon City, Philippines.

The current four general executives and 13 district superintendents from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao were given the title of bishop.

The AOG Bishopry represents a new approach by the current General Council in recognizing its leaders. While this inaugural bishop ordination is viewed as historic by many, some individuals may have reservations regarding its relevance and legality. At least three important matters need to be discussed to provide clarity on AOG bishopry.

1. Legality
From January 27 to 31, 2025, the AOG Philippines convened for the Annual Leadership Summit (ALS) at Word of Hope Central in Quezon City. The ALS is an annual gathering of the general executives, district officials, sectional presbyters, and department leaders of AOG Philippines in accordance with its bylaws.
At this particular ALS, the bylaws of AOG Philippines, Incorporated, were amended by the assembly. One of the provisions discussed during the summit pertained to the bishopry. After extensive discussion, a motion was raised from the floor to accept the proposed provision regarding the bishopry. This motion was subsequently seconded and carried by the leadership.
The provision for bishopry, along with other provisions that were ratified by the leadership, was submitted by the General Secretary to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for approval.
On January 29, 2026, the SEC accepted the amended bylaws of AOG Philippines, Incorporated, thereby paving the way for AOG bishopry. So, why not consider pursuing a bishop ordination?

2. Etymology
In the Assemblies of God, the top leaders are called superintendents. The head of the general council is addressed as general superintendent, and the head of the district council is addressed as district superintendent. This title for the leaders has been used since the inception of the Assemblies of God in the Philippines.
A superintendent is a person who supervises an organization or a place. I’m pretty sure that this superintendent's function was in the mind of the original framers of the bylaws of the Assemblies of God to recognize their leaders as superintendents.
The Greek word for bishop is "episkopos." This term is often used in the New Testament (NT), like in Acts 20:28, 1 Timothy 3:2 & Titus 1:7, for ecclesiastical leadership to oversee. The usage of “episkopos” in the NT focuses more on the function and less on the position or title. So, a bishop in the NT is viewed as a servant, not a lord; to serve, not to be served; democratic, not domineering.
Now, it appears that both the words "superintendent" and "bishop" shared the same idea in terms of function for servant leadership. So, why not have a superintendent become a bishop?

3. Qualification
Section 8 of the amended bylaws of AOG Philippines, Incorporated, states that “all AOG Philippines National Executive Officials and District Superintendents are eligible to qualify for AOG Bishopry and carry the title 'Bishop.' The current president shall be called the presiding national bishop. While the current District Superintendent shall be called the Presiding District Bishop. The District Superintendent from the regular district who has been re-elected and has served at least two successive terms of office and who has been an ordained minister for at least ten (10) years is eligible to qualify for AOG Bishopry.”
Meaning, the incumbent general executives and the current district superintendents of a regular district who have served of two consecutive terms and an ordained minister for a period ten years are eligible for the Bishopry.
The current four general executives and the 13 district superintendents ordained for the Bishopry did not seek the title or position; instead, they qualified for it. Their ordination as bishops served primarily as a recognition of their faithfulness in ministry. So, why not have a qualified leader in the Assemblies of God receive the title bishop?
